Development Manager

Job Description: is a renowned design, development, and strategy firm that uses open source technologies to help enable people to share information in new and exciting ways.

The development manager helps the team ensure the successful delivery of projects. Responsibilities include managing developers, establishing and maintaining process and quality standards, coordinating professional development, and performing code review, client consultation, and project estimation.

This is a full-time, on-site position in our Chicago office, though we will consider exceptional applicants for remote positions.

This is a full-time position that will start immediately. Salary is commensurate with experience. Generous benefit package includes health insurance, paid time off (PTO) and holidays. Applicants must be located in and legally able to work in the United States.

Desired Experience: 
  • Strong knowledge of PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Strong knowledge of database design and deployment for dynamic Web sites using MySQL and other similar SQL databases
  • Knowledge of the Drupal 7 platform
  • Experience with open source CMS and framework tools (such as Symfony or Jekyll)
  • Proficient with the Linux/Apache hosting environment
  • Strong understanding of HTML design capabilities and constraints of various platforms and browsers
  • Experience with Git version control
  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Experience with customer service
Job Responsibilities: 

Define, evaluate, and implement standards for developer workflows, including:

  • Requirements gathering
  • Task management
  • Development process
  • Quality assurance
  • Client training
  • Launch support
  • Long-term support
  • Project estimating
  • Training materials for developer processes

Manage a team of up to 8 developers, focusing on:

  • Teaching development best practices
  • Developing Technical Leads
  • Auditing developer’s work to ensure quality and to find gaps in training
  • Individual skill development
  • Addressing developer concerns and escalating when necessary
  • Individual assessment for performance reviews

Assist project teams by:

  • Supporting the translation of client needs into requirements (e.g. lead user story development meetings)
  • Ensuring development workflow best practices
  • Ensuring team members have the necessary training
  • Clearing blocks for individual team members
  • Escalating grievances to the Director of Development and Professional Services and Director of People and Process and provide support for resolution
  • Interviewing and evaluating potential job candidates
  • Providing estimates for business development, RFPs, proposals, etc.

Development managers may have an area of specialization, with an emphasis on one or more of the following areas:

  • Internal infrastructure support and maintenance, including the development tool chain and resources necessary for projects (e.g. server infrastructure)
  • Leadership of the intern program for developers
  • Development and delivery of training curricula for external use
  • Representing Palantir at industry events
  • Sales development


  • Reports to the Director of Development and Professional Services
  • Works as a peer to other Development Managers
  • Works with the project management team to review project status and monitor developer work
  • Supervises and mentors assigned members of the development team
  • Assists the Director of People and Process in defining development processes
